An estreat is a summary of the fines levied and due to be paid to the Lord of the Manor. This is an interesting document in that it shows the start of English surnames. The names seem to be mainly place derived eg Thomas of the Hill, occupation derived eg Thomas Mercer, William Fuller, and just how were they to collect the fine of 2d from 'a certain strange carter for hue and cry in Hilton.'
