Brian Smith joined the Worcestershire Regiment to do his National Service and was sent to Malaya. He did his rifle training at Blaenau Ffestiniog where the fact that he was an excellent shot was soon noticed. He said that had he realised the consequences of being so good at shooting, he would have missed the target more often. Malaya was a difficult campaign involing guerilla warfare in a jungle. The best part for Brian was being hospitalised after being bitten by a snake.
